Extensions have a bit of a reputation - either you picture red-carpet lengths, or you picture something obvious that everyone can spot a mile off. The truth sits happily in the middle. Done well, extensions add length or thickness that looks like your own hair on a very good day. Here's the honest rundown of what they are, what's realistic, and how to keep them lovely once they're in.
What extensions are actually for
People come to us for extensions for two main reasons. The first is length - you're growing your hair out and impatience has set in, or you want a fuller look for a wedding or a big occasion. The second, and just as common, is volume. If your hair is fine or has thinned a little, a few well-placed wefts can add body and thickness without adding much length at all. Both are completely doable; it's just worth being clear in your own head which one you're really after, because it changes the approach.
The main types you'll hear about
There's no single "best" method - it depends on your hair type, your budget and how much upkeep you fancy. In broad strokes:
- Tape-in extensions - thin wefts sandwiched into your own hair. Quick to fit, comfortable to wear, and a lovely option for adding volume to finer hair.
- Micro-ring or bead extensions - small sections attached with tiny rings, no heat or glue. Popular for length and easy to move up as your hair grows.
- Weft extensions - a longer strip fitted along a row, good for thicker heads of hair and plenty of added fullness.
Which method suits you, and which we would recommend for your hair, is a conversation, not a guess. We'll look at how much natural hair you have to work with, your day-to-day routine, and the look you're chasing - you can see the range of colour and finishing work we do over on our gallery of recent hair, which gives a feel for how blended good extensions can look.
Good extensions shouldn't shout. The best compliment is someone thinking you simply have gorgeous, thick hair.
Being realistic about length and volume
This is the honest bit. Extensions can add a good deal of length, but there's a limit to how much you can add before it stops looking natural - very short or very fine hair can only carry so much weight before it's obvious. If you've a shorter cut and dream of waist-length hair overnight, we may suggest building up in stages rather than all at once. It's the same with colour: matching your shade properly, and blending the join, is what separates a natural result from an obvious one. We'd always rather manage expectations at the consultation than have you disappointed in the chair.
Aftercare - where the magic really is
Extensions are an investment, and how you mind them at home decides how long they stay looking new. A few habits make all the difference:
- Brush gently, from the ends up. A soft-bristle or looped brush, holding the hair at the root so you're not tugging the attachments.
- Tie it up before bed. A loose plait or low ponytail stops the hair matting and tangling overnight.
- Be kind with heat and products. Use a heat protectant, keep hot tools off the attachment points, and avoid heavy oils or conditioner right at the roots.
- Never go to bed with wet hair. Dry it properly - damp hair tangles and can loosen the bonds.
- Come back for your maintenance visits. As your own hair grows, the attachments need moving up. Keeping those appointments protects both the extensions and your natural hair underneath.
